King Conklin Cut
- Updated: November 30, 2015
The Townsville Crocs have made a shock announcement today after they released last season’s league MVP, Brian Conklin.
In a press release today the club said that Conklin under-performed and that was the reasoning behind him being released, however sources tell ATF that it was a cost cutting move as this week is the deadline for import’s contracts to be fully guaranteed for the remainder of the season.
This is the second time that Townsville have released a league MVP the year after taking out the award. In 2010 the Corey Williams won the league MVP and the following season was released by the Crocs. Homicide went on to sign with the Melbourne Tigers.
The internet is not short of any rumours with scenarios where Conklin ends up in Illawarra, New Zealand or even Adelaide. But as Conklin was only told this morning unfortunately none of these rumours have any traction (yet).
The question is now – Who do the Crocs sign?
Fans are asking for Al Harrington, however the club has said in a press conference today that they are not in any rush to find a replacement and it could take weeks. Head coach Shawn Dennis has almost ruled out bringing back any local to fill in Conklin’s position, saying there is a 98% chance they will be signing an import, not a local.
One thing is for sure, fans and players were shocked and unhappy over the announcement today

Didn’t the demise of the Crocs fanbase begin around the last time they sacked a former MVP? #hardball

The Conklin sacking worries me. If they don’t replace him ASAP I’m really worried about the Crocs financial situation and future.

Nat Where You At
Maybe you could point Bevo in the direction of Christian Boyle, Daniel Muller. We could do with someone that can dunk on Bogut...
Cut someone else to fit him in, never cut a mvp player that has a huge impact on and off the court. Go play for the breakers and get a ring on that finger haha
Lol trading up,signing 12 guys isn't the way it works. Instead of wanting to sign a 2nd import, and suggesting we get rid of laz or Cody to do so just sit and watch what each player does. Back the boys
As per the the above comments by and the foul net. As good as? On and off the court? With the same budget? The answer is simple NO F_ cking way!
Trading up!!! He has a lot more to offer than Cody and larry just an option need someone like that to make a push For a championship. Plus bevo said at the start of the season he would like to sign like 12 blokes and just pick a squad of 10 each week to play so that way no one needs to be cut
Lachlan McPherson, obviously very unlikely I assume, but the hawks could do a lot worse than sign Conklin for a contract for the rest of the year as our 2nd import if he can hang around in Australia
Maybe they might sign homicide Williams. His already here and has told his Lebanon team he isn't coming back. I don't think it's true but just putting it out there.
Hubby and I have been long time fans and members but we won't be back next year. Regardless of this Conklin fiasco we had decided not to renew or continue our support once the season draw was released. We paid our money before the draw - BIG MISTAKE. Our basketball is supposed to be our summer weekend entertainment but now we're hauling ass across town on Wednesday & Thursday nights to watch games we don't even have the energy to concentrate on. Complete waste of time. Besides, the only reason the NBL came up with a rescue package for the crocs was because Brisbane weren't ready to enter the league. If Brisbane had been ready there wouldn't have been a deal. Now that Brisbane have announced for the 16/17 season we're definitely out.
Jumping to conclusions, over it... If Cowboys went and released Thurston, would Townsville not go watch them? No, what's the difference
And makes me question why in the first place again .... Anyways it's been made Nothing gonna change that decision Just wish him a mind his family a safe and prosperous future
Saying they don't have replacement I find that in some way respectful cause it wasn't a plan in the making, an extremely hard decision
The bigger clubs have made these calls numerous times in the past! It sucks that it happened to Brian because he's a legend bloke and great player
Yep some things never change unfortunately. It's a shame they haven't learnt from past mistakes in this regard
@Andthefoulnet website crashed!
Would you sack your best player and release an official statement blaming it on under performance and place on the ladder? No crowd = no funds. I don't know how they think replacing him will improve their position on the ladder. There's something else going on behind the scenes mate
He's useless. Got a couple of young aussies who can play guard and also be ineffective. You can never have too many quality Bigs
He was a perfect prospect to be another Redhage by getting naturalised. Oh well another screw up in the NBL is nothing new.
Not likely And once again shows that to make such a decision and not to have an immediate replacement is just unbelievable ..... Would NZ, Perth, or even Melbourne make such a crucial decision in such a manner? I doubt it I'm still in shock that this is the "official" story
Yeah it appears something else is going on considering the official press release. I'd say cost cutting and possible last season
